School starts back up next week, so we snuck in one last summer adventure: a day at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, courtesy of Popo.
With three generations in tow and one stroller-free kid who ran the whole route himself, it was a day filled with incredible marine life, harbor views, and effortless family memories. If you're planning a trip to the Inner Harbor before summer ends, here is our full recap - plus our minimalist packing strategy to keep your day stress-free.
Getting there and getting in
We parked at Pier V, which put us a short, easy walk from the entrance. If you're mapping out your own trip, parking near the harbor can easily eat up more of your day than you'd like, so reserving a spot at Pier V ahead of time is well worth it.
Once inside, it's just a matter of picking a direction and letting the exhibits pull you along.
The National Aquarium Exhibits That Stole the Show
The aquarium has a lot going on, but four main attractions kept coming up as our absolute favorites:
1. The Sharks & Megalodon Jaw
You walk straight into a full-scale megalodon jaw suspended overhead - taller than an adult, it’s easily the best "stand inside it and look up" photo op in the building. There's also a hands-on shark quiz where you pick a number, get your question and the number box contains several clues.
2. Jellyfish & The Touch Tank
Getting to actually touch a jellyfish in the touch tank is one of those experiences that sounds like it shouldn't be allowed but is completely safe and incredible. Add in the "Jellies Invasion" installation - hundreds of glass-look jellyfish suspended from the atrium ceiling, glowing softly against the skylight - and this was hands-down a top two moment of the day.
3. The Puffins
Small, fast, and weirdly hilarious to watch as they dart around their rocky habitat. Bring a steady hand for photos; ours mostly came out as a vibrant blur of orange feet! When they swim, they look like they are flying under water. This made the list for our son, but it was my favorite.
4. Turtles & The 4D Turtle Odyssey
We loved exploring the Turtle Odyssey exhibit, but the 4D Turtle Odyssey show took it to the next level. It added water, bubbles, and a poking effect to the sea turtle migration story - which was a massive hit with our son.
Don't Miss: The Tropical Rainforest & Harbor Wetlands
Along the way, we also wandered through the indoor rainforest exhibit. Poison dart frogs in blue, red, and yellow-and-black were tucked into the foliage next to a cascading waterfall, while a scarlet ibis and tropical birds flitted through the canopy. A very unbothered sloth took its time moving between branches overhead - easily one of the best "just stand here and watch" moments of the day.
Outside, the Harbor Wetlands exhibit gives you a nice break from indoor exhibits with a scenic boardwalk stroll along real tidal marsh grasses.
The Baltimore Inner Harbor View
Baltimore's Inner Harbor does a lot of the work for you. From the aquarium's massive glass windows, you get a clear view of the USS Torsk submarine, a docked Coast Guard cutter, the historic Power Plant building, and the city skyline. It’s a great reminder to look up from the tanks every once in a while, to enjoy the scenery.
Souvenirs, Food, and Extra Fun
We're officially a pressed-penny-and-medallion family! The aquarium has several press machines scattered throughout the building, so budget a few extra minutes (and a pocket full of quarters) to hunt them down, along with a magnet for the fridge at home.
- Lunch: We ate at the Pier 3 Cafe - their signature harbor sauce is genuinely worth going out of your way for. And yes, we spent a little more than planned in the gift shop (no regrets!).
- Treats: On the way out, we stopped at Lucky's for ice cream to cap off the afternoon.
- Fun Extras: There was a temporary tattoo station inside the aquarium where our son picked out a glittery turtle for his arm - the perfect souvenir for the day.
What we packed
Nothing complicated: one bag doing triple duty as a snack carrier, catch-all, and everything-else bag, plus a water bottle we refilled throughout the day. The single most useful thing we brought, though, was comfortable walking shoes - between the exhibit floors and the harbor walk outside, this is not a day for anything you haven't broken in.
Would we go back?
Without question. Between the sharks, the jellyfish, the puffins, the turtles, and a Popo willing to treat everyone before the school-year chaos kicks back in, it was exactly the kind of day trip that's worth repeating - pressed pennies and all.
