Fourth stop in our Taiwan Golden Triangle series (start from Sun Moon Lake if you're just joining). Tainan is Taiwan's oldest city, and it feels like it - in the best way. Where Taipei is glass and skyline and Sun Moon Lake is pure nature, Tainan is centuries of layered history and widely considered the best food city in the country. This is where you loosen the schedule and let yourself get pulled into whatever smells the best.
This series is built on firsthand, native insight from Wanlin Tsai — born and raised in Taiwan before she moved to the US four years ago. All photo credits are to her.

Day 5: Industrial Magic & Night Market Feast
Spend the afternoon at Ten Drum Cultural Creative Park, a century-old sugar refinery reimagined as an industrial-chic adventure park and catch a live performance by the Ten Drum Art Percussion Group inside a massive vintage warehouse.
Then dive into the Tainan Flower Night Market for retro carnival games and iconic street food. Worth knowing ahead of time: Tainan's open-air night markets rotate on a schedule, not a nightly one - the Flower Night Market specifically only runs Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, so build your days around it rather than assuming it'll be there.
Day 6: The Green Tunnel & Treehouse Labyrinth
Board a bamboo raft through the Sicao Green Tunnel, a mangrove reserve nicknamed Taiwan's "mini-Amazon." Angle for the front row of the raft if you can - it's the best seat for photographing the mangrove canopy's reflection without other passengers in the shot. Bring sunglasses; the southern sun is bright, even from inside the tunnel.
Afterward, explore the Anping Treehouse - a century-old warehouse completely swallowed by the aerial roots of banyan trees. Part historic site, part real-life maze.

Day 7: Cultural Roots & Return Journey
Start with a quiet morning at the Tainan Confucius Temple, built in 1665 and known as the first academy in Taiwan. Then head to Fuzhong Street for a hands-on "Pengtang" (brown sugar sponge candy) DIY experience before boarding the HSR (high speed rail) back north to the airport.
- One small trick locals swear by: Taiwan keeps public trash cans genuinely scarce to encourage recycling, so tuck a small, clean resealable pouch into your bag for skewer sticks and wrappers until you're back at your hotel. Any of our Accessories & Gadgets pouches works or just repurpose a spare toiletry bag pocket.
That wraps the full 7-day Golden Triangle route. Up next: what it actually costs, leg by leg.
